Chapter Eleven

Monday morning, I woke up to the ping of a text message.

Yawning hugely, I scrubbed the sleep from my eyes and reached for the phone, squinting into the too-bright interface. The message was from Winona. It read, “I’m meeting Darius for drinks tonight. Wish me luck!”

I grinned and punched in a quick reply. “Break a leg! Don’t forget to put on some makeup and try not to dress like a nun. And keep me posted!” I hit send.

I also had an unread notification from Dr. Cassandra Hatfield’s Astral Gaze horoscope app. It was an alert reminding me that I hadn’t used the app since downloading it, and my future was waiting.

I couldn’t leave my future on hold, so I opened the app.

“Sagittarius, today the universe invites you to embrace the adventurous spirit that burns within you. The stars align in a symphony of curiosity, urging you to explore uncharted territories and seek new experiences. Your natural optimism will be your guiding light.”

That sounded promising. I liked new experiences. I kept reading.

“However, remember to balance your enthusiasm with practicality. While the stars encourage you to take risks, it’s wise to weigh the pros and cons before diving headfirst into a new venture. Your intuition will be your greatest ally in making decisions that align with your long-term goals. Would you like to get push notifications of your daily horoscope?”

I clicked ‘Yes,’ slid out of bed, and scuttled into the bathroom to begin my day.

I arrived at Bright Horizons just in the nick of time. I ducked in through a back door, hoping to avoid Haley. I felt awful that I hadn’t convinced Sabrina to keep funding the school, and I couldn’t bear to disappoint Haley just yet. Besides, I hadn’t given up. I was still working on another angle to change Sabrina’s mind.

The hallways were mostly empty as I made my way to the auditorium. A few stray teachers shuffled by, bleary-eyed and clutching oversized cups of coffee. I breathed a sigh of relief when I slipped through the heavy wooden doors without being spotted by my boss.

Inside, the kids were already hard at work constructing the intricate living room set for The Mousetrap. Two girls were carrying boxes filled with what looked like real china. They set the boxes in front of a large china cabinet that also looked real.

Now that I was looking, a lot of the props looked real.

I gestured to the furniture with a wave. “Did you guys build this?”

One of the girls flipped her hair over a shoulder and gave me an incredulous look. “It came from Goodwill,” she said. “Leo wanted to build one, but Ms. Winter said we didn’t have time. And anyway, a fake one would look stupid. We got all this china donated, so we might as well use it. And it’s not like you can put real china in a cardboard…thingie.”

I choked down a smile. “Well, sure, but you could build a real thingie, couldn’t you? I mean, isn’t that what Leo was doing with some of the other props?”

The girl looked at me like I was an idiot.
